When they arrived at Lenox Hill Hospital, the men found that Nakanishi was undergoing surgery. Mike asked to be called when Nakanishi was in recovery. Then he, Brian and Jaime went out for an early breakfast at a coffee shop on Lexington Avenue.

Having fortified the inner man with scrambled eggs, sausages, home fries and toasted corn muffins, washed down with numerous cups of coffee, they set off into morning rush hour traffic to see the man even Brian was coming to think of as "the perp".

The detectives flashed their badges at the police guard on duty in the hospital corridor and vouched for Brian's bona fides. They entered the room where the killer had been taken after he regained consciousness in post-op. As they still had not discovered his name and had found no record of his fingerprints, he remained John Doe.
