Hasan made introductions and, after everyone had exchanged business cards, supervised seating. He placed Andoh on one side of the table and the Grey, Alcott contingent on the other. Logan observed sardonically that he gave himself the middle seat which was reserved, according to Japanese etiquette, for the most senior person.

Andoh began by conveying Ogata-san's greetings and reported that, having suffered a stroke, he was now recuperating at home.

"The doctors have expressed their confidence that Ogata-san will make a complete recovery. Unfortunately, at present he can neither travel nor receive visitors at his house."

Andoh was apologetic.
