The high, non-descript wall which surrounded Itoh's house gave no indication of what was concealed behind it. Set in the midst of a lush garden, the executive's home was low and modern, not overly large, but with great care and expense spent on its details.

The exterior was cream stucco, trimmed in deep brown. Inside, the doors and hall paneling were precious woods, opening onto rooms which were light and airy, with furniture and drapes in pale ivory and ecru. A collection of fine antique pottery was displayed in specially designed alcoves; otherwise the interior was simple, uncluttered and serene.

Mrs. Itoh was waiting to greet Michiko. After expressing her concern, however, she excused herself. Her daughter was visiting with her three young children. She told her husband she would have tea brought to his study, if that were agreeable.
