Michiko tried to feel glad that Tomao had called, wanting to see her, but could not. Her conversation with her former lover had been like talking to a stranger.

Perhaps she just felt awkward after their long separation and she would feel more natural once she had seen him again. Or maybe it was still too soon after her uncle's death. The idea her relationship with Danny might have changed her feelings, she brushed aside with a twinge of guilt.

By the weekend, however, Michiko had begun to feel restless. On Saturday, she decided to try calling the number her uncle had left for Minuro Itoh, but there was no answer.
