Michiko and Lori squeezed out of the elevator on MIchiko's floor with difficulty, given the number of shopping bags they were carrying. With two days left before she went home to Japan, Michiko had wanted to go on a final shopping expedition before returning to Tokyo's considerably higher prices. Lori had taken the day off to accompany her friend on a last excursion.

Michiko was struggling to get her key into the lock when the door was pulled open from the inside.

A thin figure dressed completely in black, including gloves and a ski mask, yanked Michiko into the apartment and threw her down onto the floor, then grabbed Lori, frozen in shock, and pushed her on top of her friend.

While the women yelled and struggled to get up, their attacker disappeared through the fire door at the end of the hall.
